Fukuoka Miho
Tokyo-based Architect, Designer, Artist
She is active in out-of-the-box activities such as house and villa construction, products such as tools for daily life, and art production centering on prints. She lives in Imabari, Ehime, rents a house in Minami-Aoyama, and sometimes lives in Karuizawa.
Here is the book that changed her life. A Small House for a Big Life," written by an architect named Masatami Nagata, whom she has admired forever.
Miho Fukuoka indulged in philosophy while a student in Kyoto, then returned to the Seto Inland Sea to teach high school. But one day, at one of her favorite places, the Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art in Marugame, she happened to meet the world-famous architect Yoshio Taniguchi, who designed the place. She was fascinated by the fact that such a wonderful profession existed, and entered the world of architecture. While working at an architectural firm, I acquired qualifications and experience, but I was looking for a shortcut to improve my skills in residential design. That is when she came across Dr. Nagata's book. She came up with a bold idea. If I commissioned Mr. Nagata to design my home, I could learn through the process. She did so without hesitation, but Mr. Nagata said, “Do it yourself,” and would not start. These days continued for four years, but finally Mr. Nagata took up the pencil.
Site surveys, hearings, presentations... It was an indescribable experience for me to see up close the work of Mr. Nagata, who was known in the Japanese architectural world as a “master builder of houses,” a favorite of professionals. However, when the basic design was about to be completed, Dr. Nagata fell ill and passed away. The design contract was then cancelled, and Fukuoka completed the blueprints on his own and built his own residence in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. Although not a posthumous work of Masatami Nagata, it is a residence in which his spirit can be felt. This residence was the starting point of Miho Fukuoka's career, and the moment she learned firsthand that a housing artist can change people's lives.
It goes without saying that her architectural credo, “a house that is friendly to nature and large enough to live in,” is a tribute to her respected teacher Masatami Nagata.
The world can be more carefree and more beautiful. The standard of “beauty” and the spirit of “carefree”. I want to convey these ideas to society as a way of life, and to create a world filled with kindness.
There is no tension in the architecture-centered products and art that I (=Now and Then) work on. I hope that the functionality as a tool, without pretension, will become a long-lasting and beautiful form as it is.

愛媛県生まれ、東京都在住
住宅や別荘建築、暮らし周りの道具などのプロダクト、版画を中心としたアート制作など、枠に捉われない活動をしている。愛媛の今治に居をかまえ、南青山で賃貸暮らし、時々軽井沢。
ここに彼女の人生を変えた一冊の本があります。『大きな暮らしができる小さな家』、それは永田昌民という建築家が書いたもので、彼女が永遠に憧れる人物です。
福岡みほは、京都で学生生活を送りながら哲学に耽り、その後は瀬戸内に戻り高校で教鞭をとります。しかしある日のこと、彼女の大好きな場所の一つである丸亀市の猪熊弦一郎現代美術館で、偶然にもその場所を設計した谷口吉生という世界的な建築家と出会うのです。「こんな素敵な職業があるんだ」と心奪われ建築の世界へと足を踏み入れるのです。建築事務所で働きながら資格を取得し、経験を積み重ねるも、住宅設計の腕を磨くための近道を探していました。そんな時、永田先生の本と出会うのです。彼女は大胆なことを思いつきます。「もし永田先生に自宅の設計を依頼すれば、そのプロセスを通じて学べるのではないか」と。躊躇なく依頼はしたものの永田先生は「自分でやりなさい」と言って、取り掛かってくれません。そんな日々が4年も続きましたが、ついに永田先生が鉛筆を握ります。
敷地調査やヒアリング、プレゼンテーション…日本の建築界では「住宅の名手」と称された玄人好みの永田先生の仕事を間近で見ることは、言葉では言い表せないほどの経験でした。しかし、基本設計が終わる頃、永田先生は病に倒れてこの世を去ります。その後、設計契約は解除され、福岡は自力で設計図を完成させ、愛媛県今治に自邸を建ちあげるのです。永田昌民の遺作ではないものの、その魂を感じる住宅となったのです。この自邸こそが福岡みほの原点であり、住宅作家が人の人生を変えることを、彼女は身をもって知った瞬間でもありました。
彼女の建築信条である「自然に優しい大きく暮らす家」は、尊敬する永田昌民先生へのオマージュであることはいうまでもありません。
世の中はもっと気楽で良いし、もっと美しくなれる。『美』という基準、『気楽』という心持ち。これらを生活思想として社会へ伝え、優しさに満ち溢れた世界を理想とします。
私（＝Now and Then）が手がける建築を中心としたプロダクトやアートには緊張感はありません。気取りのない、道具としての機能がそのまま永く美しい造形になれば良いなと手で練りながら考えています。
